Biology 1

Welcome to Biology 1!

I am excited to have you in this course. Together we will conduct many activities and laboratory experiments to gain an understanding and appreciation for the natural world and to strengthen literacy skills by using reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking. This course incorporates Project Based Learning (PBL) by extending classroom learning to real world applications. Through investigation, analysis and presentation students will master South Carolina Content Standards and Success Skills that include creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. I have very high expectations for each of my students, and my objectives for this course are two-fold: 1) introduce you to the science of biology through hands-on laboratory investigations, and 2) help you make connections between biology and the perspectives of other disciplines. It is my intention (and hope) that you come away from my course with an understanding of biology, and a good grasp of basic techniques used in laboratories throughout the world. To help you get started; I have listed some of the basic requirements, rules, and information you will need to be successful in this course. Success in Biology will depend on commitment and self-discipline on your part. My philosophy is that intelligence and achievement are strongly related to effort. Therefore, with some effort on your part, I know you will be successful!
