Mx. Arrocha

Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Alex Lopez Arrocha has lived a life shaped by musical expression and artistic exploration. Drawn early to the violin, Alex pursued intensive study as a teenager and auditioned for the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, the state’s residential arts high school in downtown Greenville. Under the direction of Jennifer John, they developed their musicianship and technique while also encountering a more philosophical approach to artistry—one that asked what it means to be an artist, and what it means to be human.

During high school, Alex was selected for the Sphinx Program at Roosevelt University—an experience that strengthened their artistry through intensive training and mentorship, and is proud to be an alum of the Sphinx network.

Alex attended the University of South Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, a Violin Performance Certificate, and a cognate in Education. They studied violin performance and chamber music with Dr. Ari Streisfeld (Assistant Professor of Violin and Violin & Viola Pedagogy) and taught private lessons and first- and second-year classes through USC’s String Project under the direction of Dr. Gail Barnes.

Alex sang baritone St. Peter’s Catholic Basilica, preparing liturgical music weekly and cantoring frequently for English, Spanish, and Latin Masses under the direction of organmaster Jordan DeRouen.

They have spent multiple summers in Vermont as a cabin counselor at Point Counterpoint under the direction of Jenny Beck, where their days were filled with activity planning, camper counseling, and musical enrichment for over 200 campers across a ten-week season.

Alex currently teaches middle school orchestra and beginner guitar (grades 6–8) at their former middle school.
