Have you been wondering about that giant binder your child uses for school? Well, that is a proven AVID strategy at work! Students have much greater success in school when they learn to organize their tasks and work. Having one binder, with everything in its place can greatly improve your child's ability to keep track of assignments and always have what they need, when they need it. Students in all classes at Dent are also working more on their skills in asking questions, writing, and other organizational skills that will help them throughout life.
The AVID elective class is a great way to really dig into these life-changing skills. All students can benefit from lessons that help them set goals, learn motivation, and realize their full potential!
This panel of AVID Scholars shared their expertise with rising 6th grades over the summer.
Socratic Seminars are a wonderful way for students to learn about open dialogue, listening to others, thinking critically, and answering open-ended questions. Each year, AVID Scholars participate in Socratic Seminars to develop these important skills.
Using AVID in a traditional classroom is a great way to implement skills to all student at Dent. One strategy is a one-pager, where students communicate messages or ideas through a combination of pictures and words. Here is an example of a one-pager from orchestra class.
Sometimes other people have amazing experiences and insight into life to share. AVID often brings in guest speakers to continue teaching students new skills and inspire them to be their best selves!
Sometimes the best learning is done OUTSIDE of the classroom. These students went to UNC last year for a college field study!
