Important Message from Ms. Bowers & Ms. Davenport:
As stated in all of our newsletters...
AVID Binders- AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. All 5th-grade students put together their AVID Binders that should have their:
AVID Binders NEED and SHOULD be brought to and from school on a daily basis.
If students leave their AVID Binders at home this causes them not to be prepared for classes and will receive consequences**
BULLYING
What is bullying?
Harassment, intimidation, or bullying, as defined by the Richland Two Board Policies, is a gesture, electronic communication, or a written, verbal, physical, or sexual act reasonably perceived to have the effect of any of the following: harming a student physically or emotionally or damaging a student’s property, or placing a student in reasonable fear of personal harm or property damage; or insulting or demeaning a student or group of students causing substantial disruption in, or substantial interference with, the orderly operation of the school.
The district takes bullying seriously and strives to provide a safe, positive environment for each of its more than 20,000 students. If you suspect your child is being bullied, please contact the student's teacher.
A summary of the Richland Two Board's policy on bullying is included in the student handbook and is available in full online.
Bullying has been discussed and addressed with both classes with our Sandlapper administration and guidance counselor. Ms. Bowers nor Ms. Davenport do NOT tolerate bullying whatsoever. Bullying will be handled in a serious matter that will involve students receiving consequences including write-ups, suspension, or possibly expulsion if they participate in bullying.
Chromebooks- Students need to take care of their Chromebooks due to them being Richland 2 property.
Please encourage and remind students to make sure their Chromebooks are fully charged EACH NIGHT to coming to school. Also, Richland 2 along with educators can monitor students' web activity in a variety of ways and we do not want any students getting in trouble for looking up anything that is not school appropriate outside of school.
Google Classroom- We will begin using Google Classroom. This year will be a mixture of physical paperwork and online digital work. If instructed by the teacher to turn in work on Google Classroom, PLEASE ensure your child has not only hit the turn in button but has upload work if requested.
*Please note: We have A LOT of students last year attempt to tell their parents they turned in work by showing you (the parent/guardian) they hit the turn in button to avoid you getting a notification saying they did not complete any work. However, Ms. Davenport and I quickly realized students did not upload or do any work at all. If they uploaded or turned in any work, please have them show you themselves to double-check. Also, please refer to PowerSchool to know your child's accurate grade (not Google Classroom)
Review the high transmission Health & Safety Protocols that have been implemented for the 2021-22 school year.

Transportation
If your child has any transportation changes, please email me and Ms. Davenport along with Ms. Kathy Beaudoin at kbeaudoin@richland2.org before 2:00 PM each day
Also, there is currently a bus shortage in Richland 2 so this is why your children may be arriving home later than you expected.
SANDLAPPER'S VISION
Sandlapper will prepare every student academically, socially, and emotionally to be creative leaders in a global society.
Sandlapper Administration highly encourages the use of face masks to limit the spread of germs, especially when coughing, sneezing, and talking. Masks are available to everyone, including visitors.
Students, as we approach the end of the fifth grade school year it is important that you try your absolute best academically as we enter into Quarter 1 and Quarter 2.
As we prepare for our transition into sixth grade, we need to ensure we are 100% accountable.
Starting Quarter 2, we will not be accepting any late assignments for ELA, Math, Science, nor Social Studies.
We want to encourage students to do their absolute best on each assignment, get organized, don’t procrastinate, and make sure they are prepared for middle school.
Unfortunately, in middle school, if your child fails to turn in assignments in any of their 6-7 classes each 0 will remain a 0.
If your child receives a 0 for ANY assignments it may be due to:
Not uploading pictures of their work in Google Classroom by the deadline time set
Hitting the turn-in button in Google Classroom but did not upload/complete assignments (*Parents, if your child did the work please have them show you by pulling up the designated website, assignment, or look in their physical notebooks. If a 0 is placed in PowerSchool, it is because they either failed to complete it by the date/time deadline or failed to upload pictures of their work to Google Classroom under the correct date.)
Never attempted to do the work in class with the teacher OR after class
*Also note, your child may hit the turn-in button on Google Classroom just so you won't get a notification stating they didn't do an assignment this week. However, please refer to PowerSchool to know where your child currently stands academically. We have had this discussion with ALL 5th-grade students and each child is aware they should NOT hit the turn-in button in Google Classroom if they failed to upload any work.
As stated in all of our 5th Grade Newsletters from the beginning of the 2021 school year,
please ensure YOU (the students) are doing the following expectations by actively:
Follow safety procedures given by administration, teachers, and other adults at Sandlapper
Checking your emails (students & parents) daily to be informed about information sent from District 2, Mrs. May, and Ms. Bowers & Ms. Davenport
Writing down HW in your SE agendas for each class
Check PowerSchool daily
Charge your Chromebook daily
Ask your teachers questions via 3 ways: verbally, Google Meet chat, or email
Completing your HW BEFORE school starts
Review your notes for each class daily & watch recorded videos placed in Google Classroom
Taking advantage of academic work time during the school day (*Parents, students DO have built in homework time during school to ensure their homework is completed PRIOR to coming home; it is up to students to complete their work daily).
Thank you for all that you do! ~Ms. Bowers & Ms. Davenport
