OUR APPROACH
Rototuna Senior High School has three curriculum areas, which are essential to helping our students walk strong in the world with purpose, options and dignity. These include:
Whānau (aligned with one of our four iwi)
Puna Wānanga (our projects learning space to help students develop their caring, critical and creative thinking skills and contribute to their community.
Wānanga Ako (subject learning)
Students, alongside their family and support from their whānau teacher, are asked to design their Puna Wānanga and Wānanga Ako timetable which should be informed by their pathway journey and passions.

Similar to last year, all course selections are done by logging onto the KAMAR Web Portal. When you have read through the information on this site and gained all the advice you need, click on the link and log in to the Portal. Course Selection will be open between Monday 27 July and Friday 14 August. Please have your course selections completed by this time.
All Year 11 - 13 students need to select a Puna Wānanga Option for their Wednesday programme. This should align to their interests, passions and/or pathway.
Note: If your student has enrolled for a Trades/WINTEC/Unistart course which is to occur during the day this will replace their original choice. Other Pathways options are also available for Year 12 and 13 students on a Wednesday. Go here to see a progression of the Wednesday options from Years 11-13.
WĀNANGA AKO
The main goal for most students is to achieve NCEA Level 2 by the end of Year 12. While this typically happens over two years (Year 11 and Year 12), the school focuses on a "stage not age" approach.
The "stage not age" philosophy means that students from both Year 11, Year 12 and even Year 13 could be in either EXPLORE or SPECIALIST classes, depending on their individual needs and eligibility.
If your child is new to Rototuna Senior High School or new to New Zealand, it's generally recommended they start with EXPLORE classes. This can be discussed further with the enrolment advisor.
When students join the Senior High, they'll generally start with EXPLORE courses. These courses are designed to build the foundational knowledge and skills (covering NCEA Level 1 and Level 2 content) necessary to achieve NCEA Level 2.
For some Year 11 students who are already achieving at higher levels, there's an option to enrol in Level 2 SPECIALIST classes. There are clear criteria for eligibility and a separate form to apply if you feel your learner is eligible. Note: the procedure is to initially select EXPLORE courses during the selection process and then use the separate form to apply for the SPECIALIST courses.
Year 12 students are expected to enrol in five full year SPECIALIST courses. Please note, we are not offering semesterised modules this year. For some Year 12 students who are already achieving at higher levels, there's an option to enrol in Level 3 MASTERY classes. There are clear criteria for eligibility and complete this separate form if you feel your learner is eligible. It is required, however, to initially select SPECIALIST courses during the selection process and then use the separate form to apply for the MASTERY courses.
Note: Any Year 12 student who has not yet achieved the required Literacy and Numeracy credits may need to be enrolled into appropriate Literacy or Numeracy courses for this. We can make these adjustments after the final Literacy/Numeracy CAA results are released – for the time being select courses based on the assumption you will have achieved the LitNum corequisite by 2027.
Year 13 students are expected to enrol in five MASTERY courses. These should align with their future pathway beyond school.
Note: Any Year 13 student who has not yet achieved the required Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy credits may be enrolled into Literacy or Numeracy courses for this and/or a programme to achieve these will be discussed with the kaiarahi (Whānau teacher).
