Reading Section:
Purpose is more important than the Topic!!
You don't need to be an expert on ANY of these topics. Everything you need to know is contained withing the passage. No outside knowledge is required!!
Expository:
Purpose of passage is to objectively present information
Usually read like a research report. Begin by introducing a problem/mystery and then proceed to explain the response/research that's been done to solve the problem or mystery.
Passages sometimes share more than one theory or point of view on the issue without endorsing one side or the other.
Pay attention to the sequences of events, cause and effect relationships, comparisons, and possible explanations for explained phenomena.
Narrative:
Passage tells a story. Typically deals with narration of events and revelation of a character
These require you to ask yourself, "What happened, to whom, and how does everyone involved feel about the events in passages?"
Present a tiny piece of a large story, but have a beginning middle and a revelation at the end
Focus on the Plot, characters, and mood of the passages. Pay attention to the characters' feelings about events and one another. Remember that feelings are usually implied, not stated
Rhetorical:
Passage is basically a persuasive essay. This argument in support of an idea or course of action
Arguments tend to be well structured and supported by a number of pieces of evidence
Watch for the Author's thesis, supporting evidence, and any points that the author refutes or concedes
Passages often feature rhetorical passages, presenting arguments on each side of an issue. Pay attention to the specific issues that the authors agree and disagree on.
Writing Section:
This section tests your ability to repair grammatical errors & eliminate rhetorical confusion
Passage topics on the SAT Writing portion are HUMANITIES, SOCIAL STUDIES & SCIENCE
Passage often analyze topics & trends within the world of arts & letters
Focus on the back stories of the individuals who explore/developed a new form of expression as a result of overcoming some difficulty/injustice in their lives
This passage presents information about people, movements/events from history as well as topics in the social sciences
Often feature topics are drawn fro cultural anthropology, sociology, political science, psychology, linguistics, economics and education
Passages typically present a scientific topic and then explore the significance
Author is typically concerned with the hypothesis, experiments, data and cause/effect relationships
Drawn from theories, inventions & discoveries in the natural science
Understanding the PURPOSE of the passages is much more IMPORTANT than knowing a bunch of information about the topic
