2A Spelling Words

This week, students will continue working with our 2A Spelling List:

Students will practice spelling through: Reading and writing each word, Orthography practice, Dictation, Using spelling words in sentences,  Identifying spelling patterns

✏️ Writing Complete Sentences

One of our important goals this week is learning to respond to questions using complete sentences.

Students will practice: Restating part of the question, Answering the question clearly, Beginning sentences with a capital letter, Using correct punctuation, Writing a complete thought, Checking their work before turning it in

We are moving beyond simply giving an answer. Our goal is for students to explain their thinking clearly and thoughtfully in writing.

📖 Literature Connection: Students will continue developing reading comprehension and responding to literature using complete sentences.

Our 2nd graders will continue reading Peter Pan together this week! Students will work on reading comprehension, vocabulary, character development, and responding to questions about the story.

As we read, students will practice identifying:

• Characters — Who is in the story?

• Setting — Where and when does the story take place?

• Plot — What is happening in the story?

• Conflict — What problem must the characters face?

• Character Traits — What can we learn about the characters from their words and actions?

Students will also continue practicing how to answer questions using complete sentences and support their answers with details from the text.

✨ A Sense of Wonder

As we read Peter Pan, we will encourage students to think beyond simply remembering what happened. We will ask questions such as:

“What makes a place feel like an adventure?”
“What can stories teach us about courage, friendship, and choices?”

Math Test — Wednesday, September 2

Students will take a test covering Chapters 1 & 2, including: Place value, Understanding tens and ones, Comparing numbers, Greater than (>), Less than (<), Equal to (=), Addition within 20, Subtraction within 20, Addition and subtraction strategies, Applying addition and subtraction to problems

➕➖ New Learning: Numbers Within 1,000

After our assessment, we will begin working with addition and subtraction within 1,000 without regrouping.

Students will learn to: Read and represent 3-digit numbers, Understand the value of each digit, Add 3-digit numbers using an algorithm, Subtract 3-digit numbers using an algorithm, Align numbers according to place value, Explain why the algorithm works

Our geography journey continues!

Students will expand their understanding of the world by learning about:

🌎 Continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica

🌊 Oceans: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Arctic Ocean

🏞️ Rivers

Students will continue learning how to use maps and identify important geographic features.

Wonder Question:

How do oceans, rivers, and continents shape the places where people live?

Students will practice locating geographic features and developing the vocabulary needed to describe our world accurately.

Science this week will help students understand cause and effect and explore the work of engineers.

Students will learn: What a cause is, What an effect is, How one event can lead to another, What engineers do, What engineering means, How engineers solve problems, How observation and evidence help us understand the world

Engineers are problem solvers.

Students will consider:

“What problem could I solve if I were an engineer?”

We want students to recognize that science is not simply about memorizing facts. It is about observing, questioning, discovering, testing ideas, and understanding the world God has created.
