Hi, I'm Melissa. I'm an MD-PhD student at the University of Utah interested in biomechanics and neuromusculoskeletal health.
I'm passionate about combining engineering and medicine and using engineering-based biomechanics research to make improvements in musculoskeletal care and rehabilitation. Clinically, I am primarily interested in neurologic and musculoskeletal diseases with a special focus on pediatric populations.
My PhD dissertation research focuses on image-based computational modeling of bones, muscles, and nerves in the foot and ankle to characterize foot morphology and function in individuals with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an Inherited progressive disease of peripheral nerves.
I have Bachelors degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Flute performance from the University of Arizona, where I conducted research focused on bone mechanics and designing and testing orthopaedic implants, as well as a thesis project examining the relationship between biomechanics and playing-related pain in flute players. My engineering senior design project, Osteotomy Guide for Distal Tibia Deformity Correction, for which my team worked with Paragon 28, won the Craig M. Berge Most Outstanding Project award in the 2020 College of Engineering Design Day. In 2019, I interned as part of the National Institutes of Health Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program. I conducted research in the Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center studying biomechanics and functional outcomes related to osseointegration. During my undergraduate studies and in my first two years of medical schol, I worked in the University of Utah Orthopaedic Research Laboratory doing micro-CT image analysis to study bone density, morphology, and trabecular structure in the Lisfranc Complex in the midfoot.
I began playing flute in 5th grade band. In high school, I performed in numerous honor ensembles, including Colorado All-State Band and Orchestra. At the University of Arizona, I played in the Flutefinity flute choir and performed with Flutefinity at the 2016 National Flute Association Convention. I have also played in the Arizona Symphony Orchestra and University of Arizona Wind Ensemble, including going on tour with the Wind Ensemble in 2018. I am currently the Chair of Musical Operations for the Utah Medical Orchestra, an orchestra made up of 70+ members of the healthcare community in Salt Lake City. In addition to the UMO, I am involved in leadership for Women Empowering Women in Leadership, an organization for women in medicine at the University of Utah and have previously served as president of the Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group and Treasurer of the UUSOM Class of 2025 Professionalism and Diversity Committee.
I'm from Steamboat Springs, a small ski resort town in northern Colorado, and I grew up competing in ski jumping and Nordic combined. I have a gold medal from the Nordic combined team event at the 2014 Junior National Championships and forejumped the 2014 Olympic trials.
I am currently a volunteer with the University of Utah chapter of Phi Sigma Rho, a social sorority for women in engineering and technical sciences. At University of Arizona, I served as the President, VP of Standards, VP of Finance, and VP of Recruitment. I enjoy managing chapter operations and have been working to improve our diversity and inclusion as a chapter since the beginning of my time in chapter leadership, as well as using the platform of the sorority to advocate for women in STEM. I have also volunteered as an ambassador for the University of Arizona Honors College and a patient and music volunteer with Traditions Health Hospice.
In my free time, I enjoy exploring with outdoor activities like hiking, biking, camping, and skiing. I also like playing board games and card games and spending time with my family and adorable dog, Artemis.
