Welcome to the Relay Teaching Residency!
Welcome to the Relay Teaching Residency. This unique educational environment is one where, as a Resident, you will have the opportunity to grow intellectually, act with honor and integrity, and learn through service to others in the greater community. You have chosen to embark on a journey few people will ever experience. Better yet, you are learning to lead others on a journey they will never forget.
As a Resident, you will have the opportunity to explore and an invitation to inspire. You might choose to take your students to the moon, a rain forest, or ancient China. Some of you may delve into the minds of Pythagoras, Mozart, Shakespeare, or Dr. Seuss. Some of your days will not be glamorous. You will stumble over the complexities of individuality, when your students’ independent thinking conflicts with your expectations. This climate is the greatest learning process of all: recognizing the true needs of your students and personalizing their education so that they may enjoy unique opportunities to excel.
Because all teachers are life-long learners, you, too, will expand your horizons while they are expanding theirs. Without great teachers, there is no promise for the future. Your service and compassion fuel the hopes of our Residency. You have joined an extremely talented and hardworking team of individuals who are determined to prove that we can close the achievement and opportunity gaps that exist in the city of Houston and that we can transform the lives of urban students and their families. Through high-quality instruction and a culture of high expectations we are committed to ensuring that as a Resident, you secure the academic knowledge and skills to excel in this profession. We know that over the next year, you will make indelible contributions in the classroom, in the community and in your Residency cohort. Being a Resident requires a heightened sense of urgency, dedication, passion and pursuit for perfection. We are humbled by the commitment you are making to students and their families and look forward to working with you throughout your Residency experience.
