Familiarize yourself with the conversation starter questions or come up with some of your own: Have a few open-ended questions ready to help direct the conversation.
Build rapport: Use Brandon Stanton’s techniques for approaching his interviewees and conducting interviews. Ask to take a photo and build to a conversation.
Inform the interviewee: Explain the Portrait of PHS project and get approval to sit and talk.
Listening actively: Show you're listening through body language like nodding and eye contact, and provide feedback by paraphrasing and asking clarifying questions.
Take notes and/or consider recording some of your conversation: Note any significant quotes or record longer quotes. Always ask permission before recording.
Say thank you: Tell them what you most enjoyed about your talk with them.
Ask for permission: Ask if you can include their picture and story/quote in A Portrait of PHS. Tell them we will ask for their final ok before their picture and story/quote are framed for display, or shared on social media or our school’s electronic bulletin board.
Debrief: As soon as possible after the interview, jot down or record the highlights of the conversation while it is still fresh in your mind.
