Watch from 7.53 to 34.38 to see the jobs 'churls' did in Anglo-Saxon times. A churl was the lowest ranking Anglo-Saxon, like a peasant. They had to work extremely hard just to keep themselves and their families alive. Days would have been very long, with jobs having to be repeated every single day. You would never be able to take a day off!
These farmers are harvesting their crop. They are using scythes to cut down their crop so it can be taken to dry out and used for their food and drinks. This would probably be barley, rye, wheat or oats.
This is a quern stone. The baker would pour grains in the top and then turn the stone around using the wooden handle. This would crush the grains between the two stones and make flour.
A coin of Cynethryth of Mercia, wife of Offa and the only queen to be depicted on an Anglo-Saxon coin.
Being a coin stamper was a scary job as you may be accused of stealing and the punishments were severe. For example, if you were found to have stolen a coin, your hand would be chopped off and nailed to the door!!!!
