Summer Expectations

To encourage ongoing educational opportunities, students entering grades 8-11 will continue to have access to their Chromebooks by taking them home during the summer months. To assist you, the district is providing the following tips for summer Chromebook use.

If you have a Chromebook at home and are not planning on using it, please follow the Google recommended steps to prepare your Chromebook for storage over the summer.  Following these steps will help avoid charging or battery related issues when you go to use the Chromebook at the start of the school year. 

Best practice prior to long term storage:

Update to the latest version of the Chrome OS and charge your Chromebook,  so that the battery is at least 80% full.

1. This ensures that even when the battery discharges while unplugged over.  the summer, it won't fully run out of power.

2. Connect the device to a charger and turn it on.

3. Hold Refresh and Power at the same time - refresh key has a half circle and arrow.

4. While holding these keys, remove the power cable from device and then release the keys.  The device should shut down and remain off.

5. Attempt to power the device on using the power button.  If the device does not power on, you have completed the steps and can safely store the device.  If the device powers on, you should repeat steps 2 through 4. 

 Upon redeploying:

1. Connect the Chromebooks to a charger and a power source, which will get them out of the battery disconnect state. Power up your device.

2. Connect your Chromebooks to WiFi and update them to the latest Chrome OS release.

3. This can take time, as multiple Chrome OS versions may have been released since the last time the device was updated.

General Care

• Charge Chromebook to full - Lack of charging may result in damage to the battery

• Keep Chromebooks away from pets or young children.

• Avoid heat and direct sunlight.

• Avoid liquids – ­beware of wet swimsuits and towels.

• Keep Chromebooks plugged into a surge protector when they are not in use.

Monitoring Activity

• Families should continue to monitor use at home by checking the Chromebook browser and observing student use. 

• Families always have the right to limit use over the summer.

• For your security, your password should not be shared. Also, reminder this is a school device, not a personal device; please do not use anyone else’s account on your school Chromebook.

• GoGuardian monitoring software and accessibility remains active during the summer.

Repairs/Damages

• Chromebooks that need repairs may be brought to the District Central Office between 8:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. Monday -­ Friday except for holidays. A repair form should be filled out.

• While Chromebooks will be repaired as quickly as possible, replacements are not available over the summer.

• The student will be contacted by email when their Chromebook is ready to be picked up.

If you will not be enrolled as a student at Region 4 next fall, please return your Chromebook  and charger to your school office at the end of the school year.
