What is Google Workspace?

The Google Workspace (formerly called G Suite for Education) is an integrated communication and collaboration solution, hosted by Google and managed by Region 4 Schools. Google Workspace will provide the ability for Region 4 students, faculty and staff to communicate, store files, and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in real time from anywhere.

Will my student have access to a Gmail Account?

The email function is only available to students in 7 - 12 grade, all functions of Gmail have been turned off for students K - 6. The email account that your student uses to log into the Chromebook is only used as a username in K-6.

Can I see what my child is doing on G Suite?

Parents are encouraged to explore Google Workspace with their children by logging in together. You will be able to have your student log in to his or her school Google account and show you what they are currently working on in class, as well as items that have been “turned in” and commented on by the teacher. 

What about privacy?

Region 4 Schools is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the confidentiality of student information. Region 4 Schools has a contract with Google to provide access to Google Workspace to its users.  Under our Terms of Service Agreement with Google, they are obligated to comply with FERPA regulations and the Connecticut Student Data Privacy Act 16-189 . How protected is my student from outside people?

Region 4 Schools takes security and privacy of student information very seriously. The R4 Google Apps domain is managed for access by staff and students in Region 4, so your student will be able to work and collaborate in a safe and secure online environment. 

What assurances has Google given Region 4 that they will not collect data on my student?

Region 4 has a signed agreement with Google Workspace. Region 4 Google Workspace is compliant with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and the Connecticut Student Data Privacy Act 16-189 .

Who has access to my child’s account?

The Google Workspace Terms of Service agreement with Region 4 Schools contractually ensures that our institution (students, faculty, and staff) are the sole owners of their data. Google will only access content stored when an administrator from Region 4 Schools grants Google explicit permission to do so; one example would be to investigate inappropriate use.
