Reflecting on my semester as an intern biller at MCMH, I have gained a deeper understanding of the details of healthcare billing, particularly in a hospital setting. My role required attention to detail, organization, and a solid grasp of medical terminology, insurance processes, and coding procedures. Throughout the semester, I worked with various billing software systems, processed claims, and learned how to resolve billing discrepancies. One of the key challenges was navigating the complexity of insurance policies and understanding how to manage different payer requirements efficiently.
Additionally, I developed communication skills, particularly when working with patients and coworkers, medical providers. I learned the importance of clear and concise communication when dealing with billing questions, especially when I had concerns or disputes about their charges.
This internship has reinforced my interest in healthcare administration, specifically in the revenue cycle management field. I feel much more confident in my ability to handle billing tasks and understand the larger impact billing has on the overall operations of a healthcare facility. Moving forward, I aim to continue building on the technical skills I have acquired while also gaining more knowledge about healthcare regulations and compliance, and try the lab for more of an insight on what I want to do moving forward.
