The Lab in the Library helps REVHS students to embody the RUSD Portrait of a graduate. RUSD wants to EMPOWER students by making sure they have skills that go beyond academics "to include the broader competencies needed for students to thrive in a complex and evolving world." This framework, EMPOWER, identifies key traits every RUSD graduate should embody.
The Lab in the Library fosters Effective Communication & Collaboration by creating shared, project-based spaces. Whether participating in Walk-in Workshops or managing Class Projects, students learn to work together in groups, clearly articulating their design needs and dividing tasks. They practice resolving conflict respectfully when coordinating shared use of high-demand tools like the 3D printers and the Cricut Maker, ensuring an inclusive environment.
In the Lab, failure is simply part of learning, directly cultivating a positive Mindset & Growth. Students develop perseverance as they troubleshoot machine errors, such as a tangled thread on the sewing machine or a failed 3D print. Navigating unexpected issues with supplies or machine settings requires them to be adaptable, maintaining focus and a strong work ethic to see their unique, self-proposed projects through to completion.
Every project in the Lab is an exercise in Problem Solving & Critical Thinking. Before fabrication, students must analyze problems inherent in their design—is the 3D-printed part structurally sound, or is the fabric right for the chosen pattern? They approach technical challenges by attempting to solve problems independently first, using available resources like manuals or online tutorials to find the logical solution before asking for help.
The Lab seamlessly integrates digital creation and ethical online practices, supporting Online Citizenship & Global Awareness. When students search for design files for the Cricut or 3D printers, they learn safe online habits and practice digital etiquette by appropriately sourcing, crediting, and using open-source content. Projects involving textiles or jewelry naturally lead to research on different cultures, promoting global awareness and an understanding of diverse perspectives.
Through practical, hands-on tasks, the Lab promotes Wellness & Life Skills. The required focus of detailed work, like jewelry making or sewing, provides students with a valuable outlet for self-care skills and emotional regulation. Strict adherence to safety protocols for tools and equipment requires students to demonstrate respect for self & others and teaches essential life skills in responsible tool management and maintenance of a shared community resource.
The Lab is a dedicated space for Exploration, Curiosity, & Creativity. The Individual Project Proposal forms allow students to think outside the box, pursue personal passions, and suggest new ideas & approaches by mixing mediums—like combining 3D-printed parts with stitched fabric. Students independently research and apply new techniques, ensuring they express themselves creatively by adding a unique touch to every design.
Because making provides immediate, tangible results, the Lab inherently encourages Reflection & Goal Setting. Students engage in a cycle of iterative design, using their incomplete or flawed creations to seek feedback to improve. This process teaches them how to monitor and adjust strategies effectively, turning every failure into a meaningful learning opportunity for future personal goals.
