Rules Around Work Experience

✅ 1. The Placement Must Be in England

Placements must take place within England. Placements outside of England will only be considered if the student is working with a close family member. In this case, the student must be living nearby, and transportation to and from the placement must be provided. Unfortunately, placements abroad are not permitted due to differing regulations and inspection procedures. Dudley EBP is responsible for checking and approving all placements.

✅ 2. The Employer Must Have Employers’ Liability Insurance

The company or organisation must hold valid employers’ liability insurance to protect you in case of an accident or injury while on placement. The minimum cover required is £5 million. 

✅ 3. Health & Safety Checks Must Be Completed

All placements must be checked for health and safety by a qualified provider. In our case, this will be carried out by Dudley Education Business Partnership (EBP). Placements cannot proceed unless this check has been successfully passed. 

✅ 4. Sole Traders 

Sole traders are not usually permitted, unless the placement is with a direct relative (parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or sibling). Businesses run by a single person without employees are not suitable unless they can:

• Provide valid employers' liability insurance

• Provide supervision by a close relative

• Pass the Dudley EBP health and safety check

✅ 5. You and Your Parents/ Carers Are Responsible for Travel

It is yours and your family’s responsibility to:

• Arrange transport to and from the placement

• Arrive on time every day

• Make sure the location is practical for travel (e.g. public transport or lifts)

✅ 6. The Role Must Be legally suitable and Safe for Your Age

You must not:

• Work with dangerous tools or machinery

• Be expected to lift heavy items

• Work in unsafe environments (e.g. building sites, commercial kitchens without proper supervision)
  
  

✅ 7. You Must Be Supervised at All Times

Sole traders are not usually permitted, unless the placement is with a direct relative (parent, aunt, uncle, grandparent, or sibling). Businesses run by a single person without employees are only suitable if they can:

• Provide valid public liability insurance

• Provide supervision by a close relative

• Pass the Dudley EBP health and safety check

✅ 8. You Must Follow Your Employer’s Rules

This includes:

• Wearing appropriate clothing or PPE (if required)

• Following health and safety rules

• Being polite, punctual, and responsible

✅ 9. The Employer Must Be Willing to Support a Young Person

Your placement provider must be happy to:

• Provide guidance and supervision

• Treat you as a learner – and provide the necessary support. Please note that paid placements are not permitted

• Complete any paperwork required by the school

• Work with Dudley EBP to complete the relevant health and safety checks.
