Building Level Responsibilities Include:
The administrator at each school will: 1) designate secretary office staff to maintain MiStar records of foster care students at school; 2) designate appropriate support staff to work with the needs of students in foster care and communicate with the DHHS worker, foster care workers and/or guardians, and district liaison.
Office staff MUST have alert icon in the student database updated every two weeks in order for safe release of the student to the proper legal adult. SCHOOLS NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT RELEASE A STUDENT TO ANYONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE GUARDIANSHIP.
Every two weeks, central office pupil accounting will send a "Direct Certification Identification List" of Foster Care Students to the individual school buildings. This is a fluid list which changes regularly and is updated by the state of Michigan on a bi-weekly basis. Schools are required to upload the list bi-weekly and provide appropriate services to identified foster care students.
Building staff identify the needs of the students in the building and work collaboratively as a team to address the needs.
Schools may NOT DROP students in Foster Care for attendance or lack of progress, but must communicate with the worker and implement many strategies and services students to improve school success.
Building office staff must to notify Central Office if there is a change in the address of the student, or if the DHHS Worker assigned to the student changed, so that accurate district records can be kept up-to-date and communicated to transportation.
Buildings will receive a placement letter from Department of Health and Human Services that will indicate the student is in foster care with the workers name and contact information. This form needs to be shared with the District Liaison as well as central office staff.
Building staff inform the District Liaison and/or the Transportation Department if issues occur with transportation.
Confidentiality must be adhered to when working with students in foster care.
