Dear Parents,
I am excited to be working with your child in reading this year! We will be transitioning to a more phoneme aware, Science of Reading approach to reading instruction, but in order for students to progress, I strongly feel that they need to be reading daily. Each student will be expected to read level appropriate books for 20 minutes a day. They will have access to the RAZ Kids leveled reader program, and I encourage students to use the program and take the quizzes occasionally to make sure that they are comprehending. Any RAZ Kids reading can count towards that 20 minutes. Feel free to read to your child or have them use the "Read to Me" function on RAZ Kids if necessary, but please also have them follow along or read words that they know.
Your child will receive a reading log each week, and they will record their daily reading at the bottom. They will also be expected to practice their spelling words for the week on M-Th (we have a spelling test every Friday). Our spelling words will always correspond to our phonics focus for the week, so they should get lots of practice! There is a homework tracker on this log to help them keep track of their assignments, but the reading homework should only take about 30 minutes a day. The WOD vocabulary words are on the log for your child to use if they would like to keep track of them, but they are done through their homeroom class. The reading logs are worth 20 points/week and are due every following Monday, which is also when they will receive a new log for the week.
Please feel free to contact me at nfiguerres@reaganacademy.org if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you!
