What do ocean currents and climate change have in common?
Demonstrate ocean currents and melting polar ice with this experiment!
Clear plastic bin with 1-2 inches of water
Salt
Food coloring
Ice cube tray (or small cups to make ice cubes)
NOTE: The video to the left is slightly different as they are not using salt water and are using hot water on top. You can do this if you choose!
In the ice cube tray (or small cups to make ice cubes) fill with water and add several drops of food coloring (you want them pretty dark)
In the plastic bin, add about 1-2 inches of warm water (no deeper than your thumb)
Add enough salt into the water until it will no longer dissolve
Once your ice cubes are frozen, gently place them into the warmer salt water
Ask yourself these questions:
What do you notice about the movement of the melted ice?
Do you think the temperature of the salt water affects how fast the ice melts?
What does this tell us about the polar ice caps and the rising temperatures of the ocean?
The ice cubes were fresh water and the “ocean” is salt water. Do you think mixing the two has an effect on how fast the ice melts? Is there a way you could test your hypothesis?
