One of the most important skills students can develop before entering Honors Math is automatic recall of multiplication facts. I strongly encourage students to work toward memorizing their multiplication facts through 12 × 12. Quick and accurate recall of multiplication facts will allow students to focus on higher-level problem-solving and mathematical reasoning throughout the year. Students do not need to have every fact mastered by the first day of school, but regular practice over the summer will make a significant difference.

Step 1: 0s, 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s
Step 2: 3s, 4s, and 11s
Step 3: 6s and 9s
Step 4: 7s, 8s, and 12s
A good goal is to spend 10–15 minutes, 3–5 times per week practicing multiplication facts. Students should work toward answering facts accurately and automatically without relying on counting strategies.
