The easiest way to do this is keep a sketchbook and get in the habit of taking reference photos. These assignments are for you and should be things that support your ideas of yourself as a creative person. We will use the sketchbook to start the year.
So during the summer, You have 2 things to complete.
A weekly annotated sketchbook (minimum 10 entries)
A photo resources (minimum 10 photos)
Maintain an annotated sketchbook with a minimum of 10 entries. (at least 1 per week) Be prepared to share your sketchbook the first week of class.
Your sketchbook should be about your personal interests and ideas. You should use it not only to record your own vision but to research what other artists have done, to reflect on your personal ideas ad well as suggestions for revision and growth. Sketchbooks should be 9 X11 and preferably bound - Find one with a heavy weight multi media paper and which opens easily - You want to be able to carry it with you and not damage your drawings.
We will continue to use the sketchbook as a weekly reflective tool during the school year.
THE SKETCHBOOK: This is one of the most important and useful objects you will use and need for AP. If you don't already have one, now is the time to invest in a good one. READ - Really read this article - I'm not kidding - This site is full of really useful information and explanations. Pay particular attention to "What should a sketchbook contain?" and "How to annotate a sketchbook."
Sketchbooks do not have to be beautiful but they should be full of ideas and inspiration!
Build a Photo Library of at least 10 photos.
Make an AP folder in your Google drive and share it with me - perkinsk@readingsd.org - Make a photo folder inside the AP folder and store your photos there.
Start building a personal reference photo library. Record objects you find interesting, colors settings, perspectives - If you take a photo, make sure you also change your point of view, practice foreshortening, worms eye or birds eye perspectives. Really think about your composition as you are taking pictures.
I strongly suggest you NEVER use Internet images for ANY of your work. College Board is very strict about copyright. Get in the habit of making your own reference images or be prepared to cite your sources.
We take photos every day but we don't always think about how the objects are arranged in the photo - Get in the habit of ALWAYS thinking about composition, lighting, focus, etc. Stronger photos make stronger references. Check out this site for tips and tricks.
Photographing artwork tips. Most of our camera phones are perfect for photographing our artwork, but we need to make sure we set up the proper situation. Either hang your work on a wall or place it on the floor. Make sure you get all the sides of your image straight on. Good lighting Matters! - natural light on an overcast day is perfect. No filters. you can crop the edges of your image in to have only the image.
