Students will be notified of candidacy in the summer between their Sophomore and Junior year
(once GPAs are calculated)
If you have a GPA of 3.45 or above, you will be notified of your eligibility for NHS.
In your eligibility email will be a link to the NHS candidates' GOOGLE CLASSROOM and REMIND. Join BOTH.
We will hold monthly meetings to go over NHS, the application process, and preview upcoming service opportunities.
You will apply in MAY of your Junior year.
In order to be accepted to NHS at Reading Memorial*, you must:
Have a weighted GPA of 3.5 or ABOVE at the end of your JUNIOR year.
Complete 40 hours of service:
Service must be for a registered non-profit (501(c)(3)) (exceptions are hospitals and nursing homes)
Service CANNOT be compensated.
Service must benefit the broader community, rather than just people who pay for services (for-profit dance classes, camps, etc.).
Your service cannot benefit your club or team in any way (so a 50/50 fundraiser does not count. All the money must go to a non-profit or community organization).
If you are part of a service club (Leo, Habitat, Girl Rising), you can only count the time spent on a service project. Attending meetings or putting a box in the lobby does not count as service.
Have held two leadership positions since your Freshman year:
Leadership is defined as 8+ hours of directly leading PEOPLE (not just overseeing a project, but actually interacting and leading people).
Leadership can be compensated
Be in good character with RMHS and the Law:
Minor infractions of behavior or school rules MUST be disclosed by candidates during the application process. This DOES NOT mean that you will be disqualified from NHS. We get it, people make mistakes. Failure to disclose WILL result in disqualification.
Students who do not maintain or reach the minimum 3.5 GPA at the time of application will not be accepted into NHS.
