Learner Conversations are a structured dialogue between staff and learner aimed at supporting the learner’s learning and development. They should support the learner to understand their progress and what their next steps should be in order to continue to make further progress. These conversations are integral to the tracking and monitoring process as, if carried out regularly, can help guide a learner’s learning pathway.
a) Preparation
Before meeting with a learner, review their data and progress, setting clear objectives for the conversation to ensure it is productive
b) Creating a Supportive Environment
Ensure the conversation takes place in a comfortable setting, establishing a positive and respectful tone to make the learner feel at ease.
c) Active Listening
During the conversation, listen carefully to the learner's perspective and concerns, encouraging them to express their thoughts and feelings openly.
d) Goal Setting
Together, set realistic and achievable goals/targets. These should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART)
e) Action Planning
Develop a clear action plan outlining the steps the learner will take to achieve their goals, identifying any support or resources needed.
f) Follow-Up
Schedule regular follow-up meetings to review the learner's progress and adjust goals as necessary, providing ongoing encouragement and support.
g) Documentation
Record key points from the conversation, including goals and action plans, ensuring documentation is stored securely and is accessible for future reference
By implementing these procedures and fostering effective learner conversations, staff can support learners' continuous improvement and help them achieve positive outcomes.
