Within Renfrewshire we want our practitioners to lead educational improvement through developing deep knowledge of learning and teaching, critically examining how our teaching impacts on learners; and using evidence collaboratively to inform teacher judgement and next steps for learners. Teacher leadership through enquiry involves practitioners questioning their own educational beliefs, assumptions, values and practices. Using evidenced based approaches within our own context, in conjunction with HGIOS 4 self-evaluation approaches, we can give professional rationale to our practice delivering high impact improvements based upon evidence.
Practitioner enquiry is one of the key elements in the GTCS Professional Standards and in Scottish Education policy. It is a key feature of continuous professional learning, and this includes within Renfrewshire’s NQT professional learning programme, Improving our Classrooms and aspiring leaders courses. More and more so, it is becoming an integral aspect of the day-to-day practice of teachers and early years practitioners.
