Evidence-based pedagogy refers to teaching methods and strategies that are researched and proven to be effective through rigorous scientific studies and empirical evidence. These practices are based on the best available evidence rather than tradition, personal judgment, social media trends or other influences. They are practices consistently associated with positive learning outcomes. Evidence-based means that at least one peer-reviewed, high-quality study suggests using a specific method, tool, or practice.
In the early years, play is one of the most important ways that young children learn. Through a combination of adult and child directed play children develop their social, emotional and physical capacities, increase their knowledge of the world and apply their learning in new ways. Young children are natural learners and naturally curious. They are fully engaged with all their senses... to explore, question, test and discover. They instinctively follow their interests and are intrinsically motivated by their own learning most of the time. An early learning environment and staff should support children to fully lead their own learning with considered intervention by them when required.
