Spark Detection System
A spark detection system consists of a detector that identifies dangerous particles (ignition sources) in process flows. Once a particle is detected, it is within milliseconds automatically extinguished before it can create a fire or a dust explosion. The detection and extinguishing functionalities are controlled by a control unit. This proactive way of eliminating ignition sources is why Firefly spark detection systems are called ‘preventive systems’.
All Firefly detectors are insensitive to daylight. Besides detecting down to the relevant temperature and energy levels, avoiding false alarms is a crucial aspect in the detection functionality of a spark detection system. Because each daylight detection results in the injection of unnecessary water into the process, secondary losses and often also costly production downtime are the unwanted results.
By detecting down to the relevant minimum ignition temperature and energy for different combustible material, and being insensitive to daylight, a Firefly spark detection system offers a premium detection functionality which is unrivalled on the market.
Why Firefly - Detection
Multi-checkpoint Technology™
Multi-checkpoint technology™ As the only supplier in the world, Firefly equips all its True IR detectors with the patented Multi-checkpoint technology™ to ensure detection quickness and reliability. Using a derivative measuring principle, Firefly True IR detectors can detect dangerous particles at transport speeds up to 50m/sec.
PowerImpact extinguishing™ Firefly provides high-speed and powerful full-cone extinguishing with a unique nozzle design and placement from different directions aimed to penetrate and cover the entire material flow inside a pneumatic conveying system or chute.
Conventional extinguishing systems use hollow-cone spray nozzles with relatively small water droplets, often installed only from one direction. Consequently, conventional extinguishing provides less ability to penetrate the entire material flow and can leave uncovered areas inside a pneumatic conveying system or chute.
Other Extinguishing Methods
Firefly offers a wide variety of methods for extinguishing, isolation or diversion of ignition sources for processes where the use of water is not suitable.
Firefly’s ultra-fast isolation and diverter valves are known for their high quality and superb functionality and are available in many types and sizes. CO2 gas is often used in combination with isolation valves to inert the isolated process volume.
Also other extinguishing methods such as inert gas, foam, steam or other chemical agents can be included in Firefly’s system solutions.
Firefly vs the Competition
Different combustible materials have different minimum ignition temperatures (MIT) and different minimum ignition energies (MIE). Only when both the MIT and the MIE levels are met or exceeded, ignition of the material can take place. Consequently, to be considered adequate, a spark detection system should detect ignition sources at these levels.
Firefly is the only spark detection company that offers
one single True IR-detector that is designed to detect all dangerous
dark/black particles as well as all dangerous sparks and
glowing embers for each unique application.
EXIMIO is a state-of-the-art and user friendly system that offers a lower Total Cost of Ownership. Its patented technologies maximize safety and minimize false alarms, thereby avoiding costly production downtime.
EXIMIO is based on a network structure where detection, extinguishing and control functionalities are connected to the network through locally placed hubs. Whenever needed, additional protection zones can be added to the network. Even operator interface(s) can be added at any chosen location in the process without the expensive entry cost required by conventional suppliers.
The system is thus decentralized, providing the advantage of shorter cable lengths, but offers at the same time the advantages of a centralized system by allowing the operator to control the system from any chosen location. The EXIMIO system can be integrated with the customers’ operating and control systems.
IntuVision™ is the operator interface of the EXIMIO system. It provides a clear, informative, and user friendly overview of the installed protection zones and their status. Additionally, several optional software packages can be added to the system to open up new possibilities.
EXIMIO provides information on the system and safety status through practical online reporting functions. The RiskStatistics™ report provides a summary of events and trends during a chosen time period combined with detailed status information on all system functionalities where available. Additionally, status information from multiple production sites can be centrally monitored.
EXIMIO also simplifies system service and maintenance through multiple smart functions. It notifies when it’s time to perform scheduled maintenance and provides easy-to-understand guides on how to perform these tasks. The EXIMIO online functionality also provides possibilities for the Firefly Service Centre to provide remote support.
EXIMIO InfoLED™ are visual indicators on detectors and other key parts of the system. Through colour-coding, direct communication between these system parts and the operator is made possible. This is yet another feature that truly makes EXIMIO the most user-friendly system on the market.
A Quick Suppression System is a Fixed Automatic Discharge Fire Suppression System, including flame detection, water mist suppression and control system, with strict demands on quick system response times and fast extinguishing performance.
The system is designed for quick detection and suppression of fires/flames around critical machinery or high-risk areas.
The Quick Suppression System in its design is similar to a Spark Detection System, which combines detection, extinguishing and a control panel. The spark detection system however, is designed to detect and extinguish ignition sources preventing a fire, whereas the Quick Suppression System is designed to detect and extinguish fires/flames at a very early stage.
The purpose of a Quick Suppression System is to act quickly enough to avoid or significantly reduce damages and production downtime, as well as preventing the fire from escalating and spreading into other areas, and to increase personal safety.
Firefly is the only spark detection company that offers one single True IR-detector that is designed to detect all dangerous dark/black particles as well as all dangerous sparks and glowing embers for each unique application.
MGD technology, originally developed for aerospace, is based on the detection of fire related gases. The Firefly MGD-detector can be described as an “electronic nose”. Through intelligent analysis of several different gas combinations, the detector can identify a fire at a very early stage.
