Both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 are year-long elective courses.
During the year, students will be assessed on their listeninga, speaking, reading, and writing skills in accordance with the California World Language Standards. You can find those here: Standards.
Chilton Middle School is using the Immediate Immersion curriculum for both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 levels. Our assessment goals are aligned with Warren T. Eich's Spanish International Baccalaureate program. Each year, students will read two novels entirely in Spanish: Brandon Quiere un Perro and Piratas del Caribe for Spanish 1 and Los Bakers Van a Peru and Noches Misteriosas en Granada for Spanish 2.
Throughout the year, students will be engaged in a multitude of activities all focused on improving oral fluency and comprehension. While participation is not graded separately, it is vital to a student's foreign language acquisition. At the heart of the TPRS method is keeping student interest by creating student-centric class "stories". For example, students may invent an story about meeting Taylor Swift at Starbucks or about Tom Brady being the new kid at school! It all depends on what's on their mind on any given day, and it is all teacher directed to be appropriate at all times.
