Our History

The "Our History" section of this site is intended to be a compilation of web pages devoted to specific people, places, events, and topics in Rochester. Since our major goal revolves around getting this history to our students, we format these pages in a way that could be useful to classroom teachers. On each page, you'll see sections with notes and resources that will help teachers learn more so they can enact lessons that will bring our rich history to students. In addition to a brief overview of the topic, each page will contain information in the following sections:

This section contains links to a many different types of resources that will help you learn more about the topic. These could be articles, photos, or lesson resources.

Rochester History Journal Resources

Rochester History is a scoloarly journal that provides informative and entertaining articles about the history and culture of Rochester, Monroe County, and the Genesee Valley. The journal began in 1939 and is currently published biannually. For each of our topics, we've linked to aligned Rochester History articles that will help you learn even more about the topic.

Social Studies Curriculum Connections

The goal of this project is really to make local history something that is a regular part of social studies instruction. As such, for each topic, ideas about how to incorporate the topic into existing social studies requirements are provided.
