Welcome students and families as we embark on our next learning adventure during the 2020-2021 school year! My name is Shavonne (Shevy) Jacobson. This year marks my 22nd year in teaching. Following my graduation from Hope College in 1985 and completing my Masters in Teaching from Oakland University in 1989, I have taught at the high school level, middle school, and the elementary level. I am currently working on my Education Specialist in Reading and am infusing fresh ideas and research into my practice. Following 15 years at the middle school level in the Avondale School District, I embarked on a new path. This year marks my third year in the Rochester Community Schools district as I continue to build my professional capacity and grow alongside my students.

I am excited to teach Comp and Lit for both 7th and 8th graders, a co-taught Language Arts 6 class, a co-taught Language Arts 7 class, and a Study Skills 6 class. My passion is sharing my love of reading with my students and nurturing a thriving reading and writing community within and beyond my classroom. Over the years, my role as teacher leader has evolved through collaborative professional development experiences. I was recognized as the 2015 Oakland County Middle School Teacher of the Year, and in 2016 I received the Nila Banton Smith Award from the International Literacy Association for my leadership in translating research and theory into practice.

My husband Rick and I are the proud parents of four young men. Sean is teaching a variety of math classes at Van Hoosen Middle School this year. Nate is a project scientist at Limnotech in Ann Arbor. Spencer is a sales representative for True Temper in San Diego, California. Our daughter-in-law Emily is a beautiful addition to our family. Emily works in the HR department of Scripps Health Medical Center in San Diego. Our youngest son Sam recently graduated from Oakland University with a health science degree and is planning on pursuing his graduate work in occupational therapy at Wayne State University in the spring. My husband is an enterprise account manager for Verint, an Ann Arbor based company that measures customer engagement using analytics. We will be celebrating our 34th anniversary this fall.
