Middle school is an exciting time when students are trying to figure out who they will become. At PLTW Gateway they are empower students to be innovative and creative by experiencing a range of interesting opportunities inside of the classroom. Through hands-on activities related to computer science, engineering, biomedical science and more our students can see a world of possibilities for their futures.
Through hands-on activities, students are able to actually touch on science and physics concepts that they're not normally exposed to in a typical classroom setting. They get the chance to explore electricity, the behavior of elements and different types of sensors as well as examine the impact that electricity has on our daily lives in many unusual ways.
As a medical detective, students enjoy solving challenging mysteries that lead them on a hunt for clues. These clues could include patient data, medical lab results and brain imagery. Along the way students also get to measure and analyze vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and even join witness protection as they work with experienced detectives to gather evidence in real-life forensic investigations.
This unit will help students explore their interests in computer science, and will expose them to the many real-world applications of this fascinating field. Students will have a chance to apply their knowledge as they put together mobile apps that solve some of the challenges facing many of us today. They'll learn to set up controls and figure out options for interacting with larger systems; an important reality of life as a successful coder!
This unit will give students hands-on experience in computer science concepts and skills that are personally relevant to them by enabling them to make tangible and shareable projects. Throughout the unit, students will learn about programming for the physical world from programming an electronic device, creating interactive art installations, designing and building a wearable technology or building a project that combines hardware design with software development.
