The proposed “IT5 – Five-Year Plan for a Degree in Information Technology” (IT5) program is a collaborative effort between Radford City Public Schools (RCPS), New River Community College (NRCC), and 1901 Group, that will provide a pathway for Radford High School students to earn an Associate’s Degree in Information Technology (IT) in five years – beginning in ninth grade and reaching completion after one year of community college enrollment.
The creation of the Bobcat Studio Club at Radford High School (RHS) exemplifies RCPS’s commitment to reshape its quality, traditional educational practices into ones that reflect 21 st -century thinking and address 21 st century skill sets. The idea of the Club was initiated by a group of students who were currently producing hip hop music on their own, generally in the homes of out-of-town friends. The students requested and were granted a face-to-face meeting with RCPS teachers and administrators to present their case for forming a hip hop club on the high school campus. The students were so convincing that their efforts resulted in the administration granting them a space for the studio and $500 for equipment purchase. The students secured a coach for the team (a teacher who has no experience with music production but a big heart for students) and began their work. Part of the ‘deal’ with the school is that the club will exist not only for the production of individual creative works but also for promotion of school events and to relay messages to the school and wider community. The club works closely with the video production class, utilizing their skills to incorporate video to promote original compositions and school-related productions.
