In 2017, Radford City Schools participated in a collaborative project with Radford University in which classroom teachers created Cybersecurity lesson plans based on topics identified by the RU Department of Information Technology. These lessons integrated core curriculum with cyber concepts.
In the 2019-2020 School Year Radford City Schools received a grant from the Virginia Department of Education, Advancing Computer Science Education, to provide professional development in Computer Science to a core group of educators who then created integrated lesson plans.
As part of Professional Development in the 2020-2021 school year, all Teachers were provided the same PD in a virtual format to prepare for the vetting and implementation of the lessons created by the core group.
In the 2021-2022 School Year Radford City School received a Year 2 award for the Grant, Advancing Computer Science Education to continue developing, vetting, editing and updating the lessons created in the Year 1 grant. The grant also provided funding for equipment and robotics to implement lessons. The core team decided to have grade level volunteers to implement the lessons and provide feedback for updates to the lessons.
Plans for the 2022-2023 school year are to have full participation in the implementation of the integrated lesson plans at all grade levels K-8 with the support of ITRTs.
