This session will demonstrate how foundational digital citizenship and SEL skills can be taught in the classroom and why a mentored space such as an esports program is the perfect place to practice them. The classroom lesson and esports application combine to reinforce the dispositions students need to face the challenges of the digital world. Additionally, attendees will receive resources to support parents with information on how to guide kids without freaking out about “what’s out there.” Common Sense Education, respected non-profit dedicated to the healthy development of kids in today’s tech environment, will share practical resources to teach digital citizenship, SEL, and enhance your school's positive online atmosphere.

At the “Introduction to Esports: The Games and the ESRB”, participants will learn about the various game genres as well as specific video games that students are playing today. In addition they will also learn about the ESRB rating system and how to apply it when evaluating which games are appropriate, and which games are not appropriate for students.

This session will cover the basics of the partnership between NASEF and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and what NASEF is doing to grow the partnership beyond just competition. Many schools in California are CIF member schools, this session can help them get information for their involvement in the CIF Esports Initiative.
