We are excited to welcome Mikeala Berza, lead assistant coach of the Queen's University Women's Basketball Team!
With a career spanning over a decade, Berza has built a reputation as an elite recruiter and developer of talent, with experience ranging from the high school ranks in Ontario to NCAA Division I programs and the Canadian National Team.
Berza began her journey in the basketball world at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University - TMU). While completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree, she became deeply integrated into the TMU Bold (then Rams) athletic department. Between 2011 and 2016, she held multiple pivotal roles, including Lead Team Manager, Director of Basketball Operations, and Special Assistant to the Men's Basketball Head Coach. She also contributed to the women’s program as a Student Assistant Coach and Video Coordinator.
During this same period, Berza established herself on the international stage. From 2012 to 2018, she served as a Team Manager for Canada Basketball’s Men’s and Women’s High Performance programs. Her work with the national team included traveling to Taipei for the Jones Cup and assisting the Senior Women’s National Team during their preparations for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Before moving to the United States to pursue coaching at the NCAA level, Berza made significant contributions to the Ontario basketball scene. She served as the Associate Head Coach for the girl's prep basketball team at Bill Crothers Secondary School in Markham, a powerhouse program for developing elite Canadian talent. In 2018, she also served as the Recruiting Coordinator for the Ontario Tech University (then UOIT) Ridgebacks.
In 2019, Berza moved to the United States to join the University of Florida Gators as a Graduate Assistant. During her two seasons in Gainesville, she was instrumental in scouting, recruiting operations, and creative content, ultimately earning her Master’s degree in Sports Management in 2021.
Her success at Florida led to a position at the University of Tulsa, where she served as the Coordinator of Video and Creative Content before being promoted to Assistant Coach. During her tenure at Tulsa (2021–2024), the program saw historic success. In the 2023–24 season, the Golden Hurricane achieved a 25–10 record—their best in 19 years—and claimed a share of the American Athletic Conference (AAC) regular-season championship.
Berza will be presenting "Building 1 v 1 Defense: from full court to half court"
