St. Jerome Book Battle Details
Who
Open to all students in 4th through 8th grade. Participation is voluntary. Team members make a commitment to participate by reading selected books and practicing with their group.
What
St. Jerome Book Battle is a fun competition in which students test their knowledge of a group of books selected by the Diocese of Charlotte's Catholic School Office. Teams will consist of a maximum of 12 members, with 6 members allowed to play during a round at competition. They are given a list of 15 books to read, which may be all read by each member, or can be divided evenly amongst team members.
Each team will take turns answering questions for points. A team must answer with the correct title of the book. For example: In which book is a boy rescued from a sinking boat by a horse? Team members will consult with each other and have 20 seconds to come up with an answer. The team spokesperson will answer "The Black Stallion by Walter Farley." Teams get 2 points for answering the title correctly and an additional 1 point for providing the author's name. Students must know the correct and complete title of the book and the author's first and last name to earn points.
Practice
Team practices will be determined by their advisor (coach). Meetings may be before school, during school or after school. Frequency of meetings and practice requirements will be determined by the team's coach. Parent involvement is encouraged.
