1. All games, including the Championships, will be 21 points. A team must win by 2 points. The game can go no longer than 25 points, so 24 -25 is a final score.
2. The tournament is double elimination. There will be no best 2-3 games. It is hoped that all double elimination final games be held at the same time.
3. Players will officiate their own games. Coaches, players and parents MAY NOT coach or officiate from the sidelines. If players are confused about a rule, they are to put their racquet down immediately after play has completed and go to the scorers table for assistance. All disputes must be brought to the attention of the convenor immediately, whose decision is final. In a game, if it appears that player(s) are struggling with the rules, a coach is permitted to request that their player put their racquet down to seek clarity from the convenor. If this occurs, both coaches must be present during the conversation. Every attempt should be made to have players resolve things on their own first.
4. School uniforms and shorts MUST be worn. It is disrespectful to wear warm-up suits, pants, cut-off jeans or hats during games (no hats warn at all in the gym please).
5. Eye protection must be worn and supplied by the individual schools! Students without them WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY. Sunglasses are not permitted.
6. During tournaments, no warm-up or hitting of birds between courts, in hallway, or in the parking lot is allowed. Instruct students NOT to wear their gym shoes outside. Unsupervised play in the parking lot/playing field is not permitted.
7. As an etiquette of badminton, it is asked that no team chants/cheers for a teammate while the shuttle is live.
8. Players must report to the scorerʼs table before and after each game.
9. Warm-up times during the matches must be restricted to 2 minutes. Right of serve will be decided by hitting the bird into the air. The direction that the rubber end of the bird is pointing decides who serves first.
10 The singles boundaries are narrow on the sides and to the very back line. The doubles boundaries are wide on the sides and to the very back line except for the service. For the serve the court is short and wide. (The inside lines are only for singles).
11. Servers MUST announce the score before serving each time (e.g. 0 serving 0). However, a team does NOT lose a point for not calling out the score. Calling out the score encourages fewer disputes between the teams.
12. To start the game, the server starts from the right side. The receiver stands on the opposite right side. Partners may stand anywhere on either side as long as they do not block the view of the receiver.
13. Serve must be received within the correct service court ‒ on or behind the service line. For doubles, the service must be on or short of the inside back line.
14. A point is scored on every serve. Whoever wins the rally, scores a point. This is called rally point.
15. When the receiving side wins the rally, they do not switch sides.
16. In doubles, when a teamʼs score is even (2, 4, 6 etc.), the partner on the right serves. When the score is odd (1, 3, 5 etc.), the partner on the left serves.
17. If the team serving wins the point, the partners switch sides and the same team member continues to serve so that even serves are from the right court and odd services are from the left court.
18. In singles, when the score is even, the service is from the right court. When the score is odd the service is from the left court.
19. In doubles, if the server loses the service, the serve goes to the teamʼs opponent - not to his/her partner. You must be in the court that you finished serving in when it is your teamʼs turn to serve again. No one player may serve the entire game.
20. The server must keep both feet on the floor, hit the base of the shuttle, and serve below the waist. The head of the racquet must be below the hand pointing downwards. The server cannot fake a serve.
21. Faults (point):
shuttle lands outside boundaries (on the line is in even if it slides/bounces out of bounds)
racquet or clothing touches the net
hitting the shuttle on the opposite side
two hits by one side
shuttle is carried on the racquet
if the receiverʼs partner hits the shuttle on serve reception
stalling the game
Lets (re-serves):
server or receiver on the wrong side and wins the rally
shuttle goes over and catches in the net
outside interference
If the shuttle hits one of the wall-mounted baskets in the FHS gym (not ceiling- mounted ones).
22. A shuttle hitting the net on the service and going over is a good serve if it lands in the service court.
23. As a show of sportsmanship, players should approach the net following their game, shake hands, and offer congratulations on a game well played.
24. Students who win their event will be awarded their medals after the tournament. Overall team winners will be announced after the tournament.
25. Please respect the boundaries as set by the convenor and Fellowes High School.
26. When in doubt, C.B.A. RULES WILL APPLY. Please ensure that your players know the rules as coaches may not instruct during a match.
27. An overall school winner will be determined based on the following scoring system : 1 point per game won, 5 points for winning the A side, 3 points for second place.
The Players and Coaches CODE OF CONDUCT must be observed at all times.
Reminder: Please read the code of conduct to your players before coming to the Tournament.
