Podcasting Possibilities

Getting Started

How it all started for me..

In 2015 I went to an amazing PD session on Podcasting for Educators, and was inspired. I immediately wrote a grant for equipment. So began my path of advocating for Student Voice. I've now been awarded two different grants for professional podcasting equipment for the library. Once the equipment arrived, I promoted its availability and showed staff while they stopped in for copies or other materials, and students saw the recording station, were intrigued and the word spread quickly. Information on equipment I ordered is linked here.

Equipment isn't necessary!

Equipment is not necessary to make this happen. Browse Jeff Bradbury's TeacherCast site, and he explains how easy it is to use student devices for everything. Now, in the time of Covid-19, you'll also be very restricted on allowing shared microphones and masks will definitely change the quality of the recording. Zoom and Meet are options, and there are simple recording apps, like Synth and programs available on all our personal devices now.

When possible, I advocate for mixing boards and headphones for all because it's priceless to see the smiles on everyone's face when they hear themselves, and their classmates for the first time through professional recording equipment. I think they take recording projects more seriously when it feels like radio. My new favorite microphone is about $30 and available on Amazon. The Podcast Grant information is posted in the EventEd folder for the session on March 13, 2021. If you need it sent to you directly, just contact me.

Most common response- That sounds complicated

This isn't really complicated, it's just a different way to think about things you are already doing with students and teachers. You can easily adapt almost anything you already do to incorporate digital recordings. If you get the full equipment, you'll learn how to set it up and use it in under 20 minutes. If you have to learn how to use a new app for recording, the tutorials online make that easy, too.

Once you decide how you'll do it, you can have Individual Students, groups, and teachers sign up for time in your recording space- Mine were always closets, and it didn't matter as long as it was quiet.
