The Virtual English Elocution Competition

Making a speech is an art in which a few are good at. It is a means of communicating effectively through a speech, a poem or an article. The English Elocution 2021-22 for Grade 8 was conducted on 18 th February 2022. The students enthusiastically took part in the same. Even though the elocution was conducted virtually, it did not deter the participants. The mood and ambience was appropriately set for the event.

The Final round comprised of students who had auditioned and were nominated for the same. The topics were ‘I am fascinated by the way some animals change their colour to blend with their surroundings’ ‘Restrictions on Garbage output to reduce pollution and Carbon Footprint’ and ‘Fast Food must be more expensive than healthier foods’ The pieces recited were varied and appropriate to the given topics.

One can appreciate the effort put in by the mentors who trained their students to give their best.

The following quote by D.H Lawrence is apt as it sums up what transpired in the Elocution completion. “Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you’ve got to say, and say it hot.”

From sweaty palms to cracking voices, speaking publicly can be terrifying, yet it is a crucial skill to have.

As rightly said, “Let thy speech be better than silence, or be silent.” -Dionysius Of Halicarnassus   Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. The right word may be effective, so the students showcased their talent of speaking fearlessly and winning laurels.

Speaking Skills

Niharika Singh of Grade 8 C narrated a story. The topic for the Speaking Skills Test was to narrate an original story beginning with the line “The haunted hill was abandoned by everyone and no one dared to talk about it.” She wrote this original story set on a haunted hill. She narrated with the right voice modulation and effect. She also skillfully used lighting to set the right mood to the story telling. Indeed, she is a great story teller!!
