Neptune is the farthest known planet from the Sun and one of the most dynamic worlds despite its distant location. It is an ice giant like Uranus, with a deep blue color caused by methane in its atmosphere and unknown components that give it a richer hue than Uranus.
Neptune experiences the fastest winds in the Solar System—up to 2,100 km/h (1,300 mph). Massive storms form and disappear quickly, including the famous Great Dark Spot, similar to Jupiter’s Great Red Spot but shorter-lived.
The planet radiates more heat than it receives from the Sun, suggesting a warm interior or leftover heat from formation. Neptune has a faint ring system and 14 known moons, the largest being Triton.
Triton is one of the most intriguing moons: it orbits Neptune backward (retrograde), suggesting it was captured from the Kuiper Belt. Triton also has active nitrogen geysers and a likely subsurface ocean, making it a strong candidate for alien microbial life.
