Desert Houses

Grade 2

Challenge: Build an insulated house that will keep its contents cold in hot, desert day and warm in cold, desert nights

Constraints: 

• Must work in groups of 3

• Insulation can go on the outside

• Insulation can go on the inside, BUT the cup needs to sit flat inside the box

• Materials available: hay, coconut husk, cotton balls, clay, paper bags, plastic bags, yarn, tin foil,  clear tape and masking tape

Test:

• Fill the cup with 10ml of water and see how much of it remains unfrozen after one hour in the freezer

• Fill the cup with two ice cubes and see how much of it remains frozen after one hour outside in the sun
