Grade 3
Students in Grade 3 study, "What is movement and why does it happen?" In the Kol-lab, we spent a few classes focusing on how to make movement where there is none: animation! Students learned about zoetropes and phenakistoscopes, olde-fashioned devices to create the illusion of movement. Then, they began a project on stop-motion animation.
In our opening activity, students were told they need to raise their arms from their sides to above their heads in 6 moves. They thought about where their arms would be at each count. This is the basis for animation.

from one pose to the next
Students transferred their planning drawings onto a template to be cut out and used to view the animation
Students learned that the slits and the use of a mirror are necessary because of the way our eyes convert quick images into one moving scene
