StuCo, otherwise known as student council, is a way for students to express their likes and dislikes within Smith School. Smith School has definitely benefited in many different ways. For example, the new filtered water fountains are a result of former StuCo President Olivia Frazier.
Mr. St. Thomas, one of the Stuco advisers, states that it “shows administrators and teachers what students want.”
Without StuCo, Smith School wouldn’t be able to hear the voices of the students. StuCo helps homerooms by initiating homeroom representatives. Homeroom representative represent the home room and tell information to the students within their homeroom. The students vote on their specific homeroom representative limited to their own homeroom only.
Every year, a StuCo election is held in November. During this election students run for treasury, vice president and president. Sixth graders run for treasury and 7th graders run for vice president or treasury. Lastly, the 8th graders run for presidency, Vice presidency, secretary or treasury. It may seem unfair that the 6th and 7th grade can’t run for presidency but, there is a valid reason of why that rule is instated.
Mr St. Thomas states how 8th graders, “Know what’s it like to be in Smith. Someone who’s older, a little bit more experienced and someone who’s seen a lot of things in the school which they may not like or not like.”
After the students chooses what they’re running for, they hang posters to advertise a slogan and, what that student represents. The students are also expected to attend the StuCo meetings in order to participate in StuCo. Then, later on in November there is the StuCo election which gives the final decision on who will be who.
Students share interesting facts about themselves, their ideas and their plans for the future in a speech or a video. After the election, students vote on google forms to decide who will be the treasurer, secretary, vice president and president.
All in all, StuCo allows students to have a clear voice within the smith community. A voice which can truly shape and change Smith School for the greater good.
If you have an aspiration to be a leader then StuCo is definitely for you! See Ms. Dillon or Mr. St. Thomas for more information and how you can get involved in StuCo!
Studio M was a local art school owned by one Catherine Mamola. Studio M was located just off of Ramsey’s main street and recently closed. Including myself, many kids in the area attended the school and very much enjoyed it. At Studio M, you were able to paint what you wanted to paint and that was that, nothing else. Studio M was a place that you loved, and would look forward to your next lesson, everyday.
When I asked other students that attended Studio M about the impact that it made in their lives, one student said that it has become her “second home.” Another student said, “I don’t know what I’d do without it.” Studio M has not only been a creative outlet for students, but also a place where students have been able to make great friends that they wouldn’t have met with the studio.
Mrs. Mamola is a professional artist and has many accomplishments, one of which, is the opening of Studio M. Studio M started at with Mrs. Mamola giving private lessons out of her home studio. Her business began to grow and she realized that she needed a bigger space. She opened the fine arts school in 2013 and started receiving students right away who attended Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon classes during the school, and five day camps in the summer.
As the studio grew, so did Mrs. Mamola’s art career. Her landscapes have been hung in New York galleries and has been invited to travel the world to teach classes. She has been invited to teach classes all over the world in places such as Croatia. With all of the lessons that she had to teach, there was no time for Mrs. Mamola to let her career grow the way that it needed to. This is what fueled the decision to close the studio.
Studio M closed in December, and with her new found time, Mrs. Mamola will be able to travel the world to teach, and make beautiful paintings. Mrs. Mamola has said that there is the possibility of teaching lessons in her home studio again, but there is no definite date of that happening yet. The studio will be missed by many in Ramsey.
Thank you, Mrs. Mamola.
Can someone please explain the beach? Why would you ever possibly go to a place where you burn in the sun?
(And you will. Trust me. #fair skin problems)
And to make things worse, there just happens to be deadly man-eating animals in the water. Wonderful! And there’s the water. Filthy, brackish, and probably used as a toilet by roughly a thousand toddlers.
(Admit it- you’ve probably done it too)
And to make things worse, it’s been agitated beyond belief. What is wrong with that water? Is it angry or something? Is that why it also GRABS PEOPLE IN TO DROWN!?
No? Okay.
*deep breaths*
And that’s WITHOUT the seagull poop!
(Bad experiences… very bad.).
Another thing is, even when you LEAVE the beach, it’s still with you. In your hair. And in your clothes. And soon all over your house!
(I have a whole closet full of sand-logged, no-longer-usable swimsuits).
I still find sand in undesirable places, and the last time I went to the beach was four months ago on an island in the Caribbean thousands of miles away. Explain that ... you beach-loving comes-back-from-summer-with-a-darker-skin-tone sand-enthusiast.
In my opinion, the beach is nothing more than an enormous glorified lake with a metric ton of salt spilled into it.
(From where? I don’t know…)
With all things considered, I honestly believe that the beach is for the birds.
I was able to interview Caeli about this year's ski club! Overall, she had a great time during the four times the Ski Club visited Mount Peter Ski Area, located in Warwick, N.Y.
If you haven't had a chance to experience it, next year, I think you should definitely consider it!
A: It was really fun! Even the people that did not know how to ski could take lessons and have fun.
A: My favorite part was going down the (Black) Diamond and helping my friends ski.
A: I think they liked being able to hand out and ski even if they didn't know how.
A: I wish they had all the trails open so there were more options to ski!
A: I wish they had told me the layout of the Mt. Peter and where everything was located.
A: I thought everyone had enough time and it was the perfect amount of visits to ski and have fun!
