Prof. Ramamrutham is a distinguished Structural Engineer Professor and author of over 15 popular books in Civil and Structural Engineering. His books have been in wide circulation in all the engineering colleges in India for the past 50 years. His books notably Strength of Materials, Theory of Structures Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Design of Steel Structures, Surveying, Hydraulics Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machines have been the books of high reputation. Prof.Ramamrutham happens to be one single author who has authored over 15 books covering all the branches of Civil engineering.Lakhs and lakhs of engineering students have studied his books and are still studying them. By his books, Prof. Ramamrutham has contributed significantly to the growth and infrastructure development in the country. All his books find a place in the libraries of all engineering colleges in this country.
Prof. Ramamrutham visits various engineering colleges on invitation and delivers lectures on structural analysis. Through his books and lectures, he has been delivering he is well known throughout the country. One of his books Civil Engineering Hand Book was released by former President of India, Honorable Sri R.Venkataraman in the year 1986. Prof. Ramamrutham visited Gitam University as the Chief Guest for the inaugural function of REINFORCE 2009 a mega function organized by Gitam University in the year 2009 in Visakhapatnam. His address and interactive sessions made a distinct imprint on the minds of engineering students and engineering faculty.
During the period of my study in engineering college about sixty years ago, there were not enough books to suit the needs of the students. Students solely depended on the lectures offered by the faculty members. There were only a few (may be 1 or 2) books from foreign countries which were not found to be satisfactory, particularly in the subjects of Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Steel Structures, and Prestressed Concrete Structures.
Books available during that period did not provide sufficient guidance about the placing of reinforcement, planning the connections, design of reinforcement detailing for various types of foundations. The exact detailing of the arrangement of Structural members of a Structures and the design of connections were not clearly available in the books. As a young lecturer, I taught these subjects to final year students, and I felt the need to collect details and present to my students. The absence of sufficient books, insufficient details in theory and designs of Steel and reinforced concrete structures prompted me to write books on these subjects, and help create a firm foundation in the minds of the students. My books on Steel Structures and Reinforced concrete structures were received by a large number of practicing consulting engineers and engineering students. This response from the readers encouraged me further to write more books. I felt in every book I write, the material presented should be practical and informative, covering all aspects of the domain. I also feel that the readers, whether practicing designers or engineering students, should be well guided in their quest, through my books. I have covered in detail, a large number of designs of various structures like Buildings, various types of foundations of Structures, Overhead and Underground water tanks, Silos, and Bunkers, Retaining walls, etc. These are some of the reasons why my books became popular, across India (in all the engineering colleges and design offices).
Encouraged by the good response from lakhs and lakhs of engineers and engineering students, my passion for writing found its cause. I wrote books on various subjects like Strength of Materials, Theory of Structures, Theory of Structures, Hydraulics, Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machines, Plane and Geodetic Surveying etc. These books over 15 in number, are all in good circulation in the country.
