Phonics

Welcome to Phonics at Raglan

Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) and the symbols that represent them (graphemes). At Raglan we follow Letters and Sounds and separate the children's learning into 6 clear phases. This page is designed to help you support your child's learning at home.

At The Raglan Schools, we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. This is why we teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Nursery/Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.

As a result, all our children are able to tackle any unfamiliar words as they read. At The Raglan Schools, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects.

The correct pronunciation of phonemes is key to accurate blending, which is a key skill children need to have when they are learning to read and write. It is therefore important that we model to children reading 'pure' sounds. This means we have to be careful not to put an ‘uh’ sound at the end of words e.g. pronouncing 's' as 'suh'.

These three videos show you how to pronounce the sounds. Notice how the children don’t add an ‘uh’ sound at the end, so they say: ‘t’ not ‘tuh’. Use the downloadable information to help your child remember how to write their letters and say their sounds.

Below are links to clips to help you practise together at home:

Phase 3

At Raglan each new phoneme has an action, which helps children to remember the phoneme and the formation of

Mnemonics to help us learn our phonemes.

At Raglan we use Mnemonics to help us remember the sound and also it's orientation. We also have a phrase, that helps the children with the correct pronunciation.

At Raglan we continue to encourage children to apply their learning at home which can be done in practical ways as outlined in the phase handbooks or using high quality websites, as linked below.

Assessment

At Raglan we assess children to identify gaps in learning and to help ensure they make progress. Formal assessments are carried out at the end of each half term as well as informal assessments at the end of each phonics lesson.

Key Terminology

As children progress through each phonics phase there will be new terminology which they will use. This is also the terminology we use whilst teaching.
