This year in second grade we are using the Amplify CKLA (core knowledge language arts) curriculum. There are two components to the curriculum which are explained below.
The Skills component of the program teaches students the decoding skills needed for (future) independent reading. Each Skills lesson begins with a warm-up, reviewing previously taught content in reading, writing, and/or grammar.
Each week for homework, we will send home a reading from our anchor text. Please read the story with your child and return the reading slip to school.
Anchor Texts:
The Cat Bandit
Bedtime Tales
Kids Excel
The Job Hunt
Sir Gus
The War of 1812
The Knowledge component of the program is designed to help students build background knowledge and vocabulary. These skills are critical to listening and reading comprehension. Through read-alouds in each topic, teachers build students’ listening and reading comprehension and oral language skills.
We will spend about a month on each topic.
Topics:
Fairy Tales and Tall Tales
Ancient Civilizations
Greek Myths
Cycles in Nature
Insects
The American Civil War
Poetry
Creating Change
All About Nutrition
The Age of Aviation
