Veerammanahalli, in Chikkaballapur district is rapidly being co opted into the expanding Bangalore city. As this happens, agricultural land is transforming into residential and industrial layouts. Small farms, however, are vital to retaining and preserving biodiversity. They play an essential role in adapting agriculture to rapidly changing climate patterns. Small farmers in Chikkaballapur as in other areas around Bangalore are employing regenerative farming practices to improve biodiversity, saving traditional seeds and forming peer groups of support and knowledge sharing in their regions. Narasimha Reddy is a legend in the farming community in this area. He has been experimenting with inter-cropping, changing crop rotations, diversifying crops, using new irrigation and nourishment techniques as well as saving indigenous varieties of seeds. These local and contextualised practices for climate change survival and adaptation must be recognised, strengthened and protected.
