Eileen Jackson Southern (February 19, 1920 – October 13, 2002) was an American musicologist, researcher, author, and teacher. Her groundbreaking work focused on Black American musical styles, musicians, and composers, as well as early music traditions.
Inspired by Eileen Jackson Southern’s legacy, Mr. Hamilton’s classes have been researching and exploring genres of music rooted in African American origin and tradition. Their goal is to create a chronological timeline that highlights the history and evolution of African American-influenced music in the United States.
We invite you to enjoy and reflect on the many examples of Black excellence in music showcased here, spanning centuries of innovation and artistry.
Thank you,
Mr. Hamilton
