February's Project

Black History Month STEAM Project

During the month of February students will learn about many African American leaders in our country. They will also learn about the culture and insight as well as how African Americans have shaped this country to make it what it is today. In addition, to them learning about how African American’s held to shape our country, they will also be making a STEAM project relating to their leader. Our class will be focusing on African American Authors. Each student has randomly selected a name for their project. Please follow the instructions below to help your child complete their project and present it in class. We will be conducting most of the project in class; except for the following. Two Research Articles on your leader and your STEAM project planning sheet are due on Friday, February 7th. Notecards with five facts about their leader is due on Wednesday, February 19th. This will allow us to help our students practice in class prior to the presentation date. On Thursday, February 27th, we will have a Black History Month museum in our classrooms at 1:15 pm. Students will only dress up on Thursday, February 27th.

1. Students must research their leader that is written on the bottom of this form.

2. Students must print off two research articles and bring them on Friday, February 7th.

3. Students must fill out the attached STEAM Planning Sheet for their in-class STEAM Project, and bring it in on Friday, February 7th. We will begin making the projects in class on Monday, February 10th.

4. Students must provide five notecards, and each notecard must have at least one fact written on it. (These are due on Wednesday, February 19th).

5. Find at least five facts about the leader:

a. What is your leader’s name?

b. What makes them such a special leader in black history?

c. Where did they live?

d. What is the name of at least one school they attended?

e. How has their history impacted America?

6. Bring in at least 2 articles on your child’s leader that shows where they found their facts. (This is due on Friday, February 7th)

7. Your child will hand write these five facts on five notecards; one fact per notecard. Please make sure the notecards are in your child’s handwriting.

8. Your child will use the five facts and present them during the museum as a speech.

9. They are expected to dress up like their leader. They must dress up on the presentation day, which is on Thursday, February 27th. Presentations will be February 27, 2020

10. Your child will need to bring in a picture of their leader to show they tried to dress up like them.

11. Please see attached rubric for grading.

12. Parents will be welcomed to come and view the museum from 1:15 pm until 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 27th.
