Weather, Measurements and Math
Here is a super simple STEM activity you can do with your students as the snow begins to fall where you live. Begin by discussing what a prediction is or reviewing the idea. You can also have older students conduct some research about the typical winter weather and past snowfall in your local area before making their prediction. Then, on the first day that snow falls at your house, have everyone write down their predicted number of inches of snow that will fall during the winter along with a fun activity they want the family to do if their predicted amount of snow is most accurate. As the winter goes on, students will have to regularly measure and keep track of the snowfall. You can use any of the the snow trackers we’ve created that includes a place for their predictions and several graphics students can fill in as they track the snow.
For each inch of snow, have students color in one centimeter of the image. You might have to print more than one graphic depending on where you live! You can also create a fun garland by coloring one of the small graphics for every inch of snow and stringing them together. To take things a step or two further, you can have students graph this information and/or find statistics like mean, median and mode. When cold weather has ended and no more snow is falling, it will be so fun to see whose prediction was most accurate and to celebrate with their chosen activity. Super simple STEM and super winter fun!
