For the first trimester of the school year, your child will get to "book shop" in the classroom for a book to read for the week. This book will be at his or her reading level or one level higher. Your child is encouraged to read this book to a parent nightly. The more he or she reads it, the better fluency and comprehension skills will grow. There will be comprehension sheet to complete with the book.
As the school year progresses and we tackle different reading comprehension strategies, students will receive a weekly scholastics magazine with a comprehension packet to complete weekly. Once we begin our scholastics reading comprehension packets, students will no longer have an assigned book to read each week at their level but will be encouraged to read a book for at least 20 minutes a night.
The homework bag is due back on Fridays!
Homework will only be assigned Monday through Friday. THERE WILL BE NO HOMEWORK ASSIGNED OVER THE WEEKEND. Enjoy the time with your family!
A math worksheet will go home daily, as long as we have completed the lesson of the day. The front of the sheet will have questions on the topic taught. The back of the worksheet will contain a spiral review of topics taught previously. This assignment should not take longer than 15 minutes. If your child is struggling, please make a note of it at the top of the assignment so I can go over it with him or her the next day!
Addition and subtraction math facts: Math fluency is so important in 2nd grade. I am asking that you review your child's math facts 2-3 times a week. The more fluent your child gets in addition and subtraction, the easier it will be to pick up on new topics, later in the year. We do use an online website xtra math daily at school to practice. This can also be accessed at home using the login inside your child's take home folder. Flashcards work too!
